A Forwarded Message from Barbara Byrd-Bennett, Chief Executive Officer | Chicago Public Schools

Posted 12/7/2012 11:14:16 AM

Over these past few weeks, most of you have heard about the utilization crisis facing our District. Because of population declines over the past decade, 145,000 fewer school-aged children reside in Chicago than they did 10 years ago. And, although enrollment in CPS schools has shown a similar decline, we have taken little action to address this issue. As a result, CPS currently serves 403,000 students but has space for more than 511,000. That means 20 percent of our schools are empty.

A Forwarded Message from Mrs. Barbara Byrd-Bennett, CEO of CPS

Posted 11/7/2012 12:00:25 PM

Last week, I announced that CPS will not take any further steps with school actions, such as school closures and consolidations, until as a District we have completed a very critical first step in the conversation around school actions – launching a rigorous and respectful community engagement process that allows parents and the community to have a voice at the front end of any decisions made around school actions. The trust that the many parents and the community has for CPS is broken, and it’s time that we acknowledge that and take the steps needed to heal any wounds.
